DUPR vs. UTPR, UTR-P, Self-Ratings & WPR

Pickleball has had a messy pile of rating systems. Today one has clearly won: DUPRis the official exclusive rating of USA Pickleball’s own championships and the pro tours. Here is how it compares to UTR-P, the legacy UTPR, plain self-ratings, and the rest — and how to translate a number from one to another.

DUPR vs. UTR-P: the two algorithmic systems

These are the two that actually compete today. Both watch real results and move your number up or down. The differences are scale and philosophy. DUPR’s 2.0–8.0 scale counts every recorded match — a Tuesday-night rec game shapes your rating just like a tournament. UTR-P runs 1.0–10.0and keeps sanctioned results (“verified”) separate from rec results (“unverified”).

USA Pickleball uses DUPR as the official exclusive rating for its Golden Ticket and National Championships, but still sanctions tournaments that use either DUPR or UTR-P — so you may carry both numbers for a while.

DUPR vs. self-ratings

A self-rating is you looking at a checklist and picking a number. It is useful when you have no match history, but it is famously unreliable — players under- or over-rate themselves, and there is no algorithm keeping anyone honest. DUPR replaces the guess with math: it earns your number from results against real opponents. Think of a self-rating as your estimate and DUPR as your measurement.

Conversion chart (approximate)

These systems don’t map perfectly, but this is the rough translation most players see:

Self-ratingDUPRUTR-PIPTPA
3.0~2.9 – 3.1~4.03.0
3.5~3.4 – 3.6~5.03.5
4.0~3.9 – 4.1~6.04.0
4.5~4.4 – 4.6~7.04.5

Approximate — your true DUPR comes only from recorded matches, not a conversion.

FAQ

Is DUPR the same as UTPR?

No. UTPR was USA Pickleball's older tournament-only rating. It has been retired — USA Pickleball moved to UTR-P in 2024 and then made DUPR its official exclusive rating for its owned events.

What's the difference between DUPR and UTR-P?

Both are algorithmic. DUPR runs on a 2.0–8.0 scale and counts every recorded match; UTR-P runs on a 1.0–10.0 scale and separately marks sanctioned play as 'verified' and rec play as 'unverified'. USA Pickleball uses DUPR for its Golden Ticket and National Championships but still sanctions tournaments using either.

How do I convert my self-rating to a DUPR rating?

Roughly, a self-rated 3.5 lands near a 3.4–3.6 DUPR, a 4.0 near 3.9–4.1, and so on. But conversions are approximate — the only way to get a real DUPR is to log actual match results.
