How to Get Better at Pickleball
Almost everyone plateaus at the same place — banging drives from the baseline. Breaking through is about a handful of habits: get to the net, learn the soft game, and play smarter doubles. Here’s the map, with links to go deep on each.
1. Get to the kitchen line
The single biggest habit in pickleball: the team controlling the net (the kitchen line) wins the vast majority of points. After you serve or return, your goal is to advance to the line and stay there. Everything else is in service of getting there and holding it.
2. Master the soft game
Power is easy; touch is what separates levels. The two soft shots that matter most are the dink (a soft shot into the kitchen from the net) and the third shot drop (the soft shot that gets you to the net). Learn these and you stop giving opponents free put-aways.
3. Play smart doubles
90% of pickleball is doubles, and most points are lost, not won. Move with your partner, hit to the middle to create confusion, and be patient. The full playbook is in doubles strategy.
4. Track your progress
What gets measured improves. Logging rated matches gives you a DUPR rating so you can see real progress and find fair games — and playing up against stronger opponents is the fastest way to climb. See how to raise your DUPR.
How to dink
The soft game that wins points at the net — how to dink low, cross-court, and patiently, plus the mistakes to avoid.
The third shot drop
The most important shot in pickleball — why you hit it, how to execute it, and when to drive instead.
Doubles strategy
Get to the net together, hit to the middle, be patient — the positioning and shot selection that win doubles.

What actually moves your rating — play rated matches, challenge up, sharpen the soft game, and log results.
