Pickleball Doubles Strategy

Almost all pickleball is doubles, and most points are lost, not won — on unforced errors. The winning strategy is less about hitting winners and more about position, teamwork, and patience. Here are the tactics that matter.

Get to the net — together

The team at the kitchen line wins most points. Your first job every rally is to get both players to the line — usually behind a third shot drop. Never leave one partner up and one back if you can help it; a split formation is easy to attack down the middle.

Move as a unit

Imagine a short rope connecting you and your partner. When the ball pulls one of you wide, the other slides to cover the middle. You defend as a wall, not two islands. The gap between partners is where good teams attack — close it by moving together.

Hit to the middle

“Down the middle solves the riddle.” A ball between two opponents causes hesitation (whose ball is it?) and removes the sharp angles they could hit back. When in doubt, the middle is the high-percentage target — especially on drops and drives.

Be patient and cut errors

At the 3.0–4.0 level, the team that makes fewer unforced errors wins — full stop. Don’t try to end points early by speeding up low balls. Play the dink game, wait for a ball that pops up, and only then attack. Let your opponents be the impatient ones.

Reading about it only gets you so far.
