The Story

Why DUPR Became Pickleball’s Standard

In a few short years DUPR went from a 2021 startup to the official exclusive ratingof USA Pickleball’s championships and the pro tours. It won for one blunt reason: it measured everyone more accurately than anything before it — and it was free.

The problem DUPR solved

Before DUPR, pickleball had two bad options. Self-ratings were a guess, and everyone knew the guess was gamed — sandbaggers under-rated to win easy brackets. The official alternative, UTPR, only counted sanctioned tournaments. If you rarely entered tournaments, your rating was frozen in the past. The result was infamous: players with a genuine 5.0-level game showing up in 3.5 brackets at national events, wrecking the competition for everyone.

How it took over — the short timeline

2021
DUPR is founded by Steve Kuhn, who also started Major League Pickleball — giving it an instant, high-profile proving ground.
Nov 2022
Pickleball.com adopts DUPR, which brings its subsidiaries — including the PPA Tour — onto the system.
2024
USA Pickleball retires its old UTPR system, briefly moving to UTR-P for sanctioned tournaments.
By 2026
DUPR is the official exclusive rating of USA Pickleball's owned events (Golden Ticket, Nationals) and is used by the PPA and APP tours.

Why it stuck

Three things turned early adoption into a standard:

  • Every match counts. Rec games, leagues, and tournaments all feed one rating — so it reflects how you actually play, not just how you tournament.
  • One universal number. A 4.0 means the same thing everywhere. That portability is exactly what a fragmented, fast-growing sport needed.
  • Free, with the tours behind it. No paywall, plus the credibility of MLP, the PPA, and USA Pickleball. Once the events you care about use DUPR, everyone gets a DUPR — a network effect that compounds.

The honest caveats

No rating is perfect. Because DUPR counts recreational play, its accuracy depends on scores being entered honestly — bad or missing data still muddies a rating. Sandbagging didn’t vanish, it just got harder. And UTR-P still exists as a sanctioned alternative, so some players juggle two numbers. But the direction is settled: DUPR is the rating the sport organizes around, and the way to make yours trustworthy is simply to play — and log — more real matches.

Know your level? Now find games to play it.

A rating is only as good as the games behind it. VolleyForge matches you with players near you at your DUPR level — so you can log more matches, sharpen your rating, and actually play. It's free to join.

Heads up: VolleyForge ratings are self-reported today — official DUPR sync is on the way.

FAQ

Who created DUPR and when?

DUPR was founded in 2021 by Steve Kuhn, the founder of Major League Pickleball. Its scale runs from 2.0 to 8.0.

Is DUPR the official USA Pickleball rating?

Yes — DUPR is the official exclusive rating system for USA Pickleball's owned events (the Golden Ticket series and National Championships). USA Pickleball also still sanctions some tournaments that use UTR-P.

Why did DUPR beat UTPR?

UTPR only counted sanctioned tournaments, so a player's rating could badly lag their real skill — 5.0-level players were landing in 3.5 brackets. DUPR counts every recorded match, weights recency and competition, and is free, so it reflects reality far better.
